PKC Corporation grew out of the singular vision of its founder, Dr. Lawrence L. Weed. Dr. Weed is known as the "father of the problem-oriented medical record (POMR)," which he developed along with subjective, objective, analytical, and planning (SOAP) progress notes. The POMR is a key concept in medical informatics, providing a way to audit medical records by focusing not only on what was done, but why. The POMR and SOAP notes have been adopted by countless healthcare professionals and major medical institutions. According to Dr. Weed, the core problem with modern healthcare is that the human brain cannot process the sheer volume of information required to properly care for a patient in the short time available. In 1982, he founded PKC Corporation to make computerized "knowledge coupling" tools that address that very problem. Couplers were born. Over the next decade, we perfected techniques for methodically reviewing medical literature and populating PKC's medical database with the information that is used to draw connections between symptoms, conditions, and treatments. Since 1992, we have released two new versions of Couplers each year. In addition, we also build custom versions of our software to meet the specific needs of the Department of Defense. With the release in 2004 of our Web-based software service, users can access all of the benefits of Couplers using the Internet. Moving into the future, PKC will continue to take advantage of the latest technology to help improve the effectiveness of healthcare and reduce its cost. |
